Hiking is my top thing to do in British Columbia. The terrain is so varied that I can hike up hills or on flat sandy beaches, alone or with crowds of people, on wheelchair accessible trails or faint trails through the forest. . . .

Imagine long deserted beaches, birds never before seen (at least by my eyes), hot sun, and complete solitude for a week. I found it all hiking the East Beach of Naikoon Provincial Park in the Queen Charlotte Islands. (I will not guarantee sunshine, but I got burnt when I was expecting rain!).

Imagine the history of the Klondike Gold Rush, and hiking in miners’ footsteps. That can be had on the Chilkoot Pass trail, a demanding but extremely scenic hike in northern British Columbia.

Another great hike for history buffs is the Monkman Trail near Chetwynd. The trail embodies the daring thinking of the men that drove a car through the Monkman Pass in the 1930s.

And imagine hiking on the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies. Mount Robson's trails lead one past many waterfalls, glaciers, mountain flowers, and even a wolverine (the only one I have ever seen in the wild). (collapse)
